Wondering what to do in Sofia? Bulgaria’s capital packs 2,000 years of history into a walkable centre: Roman ruins under the metro, golden-domed cathedrals, mineral springs you can drink from and Vitosha Mountain rising right behind the city. It is also one of the best-value capitals in Europe and has used the euro since January 2026.

Top sights in Sofia’s city centre

Most of Sofia’s landmarks sit within a 20-minute walk of each other, so you can see the highlights in a single day on foot.

1. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Sofia’s most famous landmark and one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the Balkans. It was built in honour of the soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, and its gold-leaf domes are visible from across the city. Go inside for the dim, candle-lit interior, then browse the antiques and Soviet-era souvenirs at the small flea market on the square.

2. Join the Free Sofia Tour

The easiest way to get your bearings. The Free Sofia Tour starts at the Palace of Justice, lasts about two hours and covers the main sights with a local guide. There is no fixed price; you tip what you think it was worth. Start times change by season, so check their website before you go.

3. Walk through the ruins of ancient Serdica

Sofia was once the Roman city of Serdica, and it is still right under your feet. The Serdica archaeological complex was uncovered in 2010 during metro construction, and today you can walk among the Roman streets and foundations for free, next to the Serdika metro station and the Largo.

4. Rotunda of St. George

A small red-brick church from the 4th century, hidden in the courtyard behind the Presidency. It is considered the oldest building in Sofia and has layers of medieval frescoes inside. Time your visit with the changing of the guard in front of the Presidency.

5. Banya Bashi Mosque and the mineral springs

Built in 1566–67, Banya Bashi is the only working Ottoman-era mosque in the city. Just across the square, locals fill bottles with warm mineral water from public taps. Bring a bottle and try it; it is free and naturally warm.

6. Regional History Museum (Central Mineral Baths)

The striped, Viennese-style building of the old Central Mineral Baths now houses the Sofia Regional History Museum. The exhibits tell the story of the city from prehistory to today, and the building alone is one of the most photographed in Sofia.

7. St. Sofia Church

The 6th-century basilica that gave the city its name. Underneath it is an underground museum with Roman and early Christian tombs, visited with a guided tour.

8. Vitosha Boulevard and the NDK

Sofia’s main pedestrian street runs from St. Nedelya Church toward the National Palace of Culture (NDK), with Vitosha Mountain as the backdrop. It is lined with cafés, bars and shops and is at its best in the evening.

9. Museum of Socialist Art

A sculpture park full of Lenin and Stalin statues, plus a gallery of communist-era paintings and propaganda films. The red star that once topped the Party House is here too. It is a short metro ride from the centre (G.M. Dimitrov station).

10. National History Museum

The best place in Bulgaria to see Thracian gold treasures, Roman finds and medieval art. It sits at the foot of Vitosha in the Boyana district, so combine it with Boyana Church (#16).

Adrenaline & unique things to do in Sofia

Seen enough churches? Sofia is one of the few European capitals where you can legally shoot real firearms with a professional instructor, and it costs a fraction of what you would pay in Western Europe. These are the experiences our guests tell their friends about.

12. Play paintball

Group of friends in camouflage paintball overalls in the indoor paintball field near Sofia

Split into teams and battle it out in elimination, capture-the-flag and hide-and-seek scenarios. Great for groups of friends, team building and stag parties, with indoor and outdoor options so the weather never cancels the game.

13. Try clay pigeon shooting

Clay pigeon shooting near Sofia

Track and hit flying clay targets with a shotgun, the classic countryside sport. Choose 25 or 50 rounds, on its own or as an add-on to any shooting package.

14. Take a sniper shot at 100 metres

Sniper rifle with scope aimed at the 100 meter target at the shooting range near Sofia

For something truly different, lie down behind a .308 sniper rifle and aim at a target 100 metres away. It is included in Package 6 or can be added to any other package.

Nature: Vitosha Mountain and Boyana

15. Hike Vitosha Mountain

Few capitals have a 2,290-metre mountain on their doorstep. Vitosha Nature Park starts about 10 km from the centre. Hike to the summit of Cherni Vrah in summer, walk among the boulders of Zlatnite Mostove (the “Golden Bridges” stone river) or simply ride up for the views over the city.

16. Boyana Church

A tiny UNESCO World Heritage church at the foot of Vitosha with frescoes from 1259, famous for their realistic faces, painted long before the Italian Renaissance. Visits are short and timed to protect the frescoes.

17. Seven Rila Lakes

Bulgaria’s most famous hike: seven glacial lakes stacked above one another in the Rila Mountains. It is a full-day trip from Sofia and is best done from late June to September, usually with an organised tour or your own car.

Best day trips from Sofia

18. Rila Monastery

About 120 km (roughly two hours by car) south of Sofia, Rila Monastery is Bulgaria’s most important spiritual site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The striped arches and painted main church are free to enter; the museum has a small fee. Many tours combine it with Boyana Church on the same day.

19. Plovdiv

Bulgaria’s second city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Walk the cobbled Old Town, visit the Roman theatre, which still hosts concerts, and have dinner in the Kapana creative district. It is easily reached by bus or train from Sofia.

20. Eat like a local

Start the day with banitsa (flaky cheese pastry) and boza or ayran. For lunch or dinner, order a shopska salad, cold tarator soup in summer, kebapche (grilled minced meat) and a glass of rakia. Portions are big and prices are low by European standards.

21. Taste Bulgarian wine

Bulgaria has been making wine since Thracian times. Look for local grapes like Mavrud, Melnik and Rubin at a wine bar or on a guided tasting with cheese pairings.

22. Browse the Central Market Hall and the Women’s Market

The Central Market Hall (1911) is a beautiful place to grab snacks and souvenirs. A few blocks away, the Zhenski Pazar (Women’s Market) is Sofia’s busiest open-air market: cheap fruit, spices, honey and plenty of local character. Keep an eye on your wallet in the crowds.

Things to do in Sofia at night & with groups

Sofia’s nightlife is lively and affordable, with cocktail bars in the centre, especially around Vitosha Boulevard and Shishman Street, and late-night clubs in the student district. If you’re celebrating with a group, these are the ways to make it memorable.

23. Ride a party bus through the city

25. Plan a bachelor (stag) party in Sofia

Add the party bus and your whole day is sorted.

Things to do in Sofia on a rainy day

Practical tips for visiting Sofia in 2026

  • Currency: Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but carry some cash for markets and small shops.
  • Getting around: the centre is walkable; the metro connects the airport, the centre and the Vitosha side of the city. Taxis are cheap, but use a known company or a ride-hailing app.
  • Language: street signs are in Cyrillic, but most young people and anyone in tourism speak English.
  • Yes or no: Bulgarians traditionally shake their head for “yes” and nod for “no”. When in doubt, ask for a verbal answer.
  • Best time to visit: May–June and September–October for city walks and hiking; December–March if you want to combine the city with skiing.
